Student Case Presentations on Informed Consent
& Confidentiality

A collaboration between the Singapore Register of Psychologists and the Department of Psychology, National University of Singapore.

The Singapore Register of Psychologists (SRP) is collaborating with the National University of Singapore (NUS) on an Undergraduate course, Introduction to Clinical Psychology.

As part of their tutorials, students work in groups to apply the Singapore Psychological Society’s (SPS) Code of Ethics to realistic cases, examining informed consent and confidentiality across the lifespan, and resolving dilemmas using the SPS Ethical Decision-Making Model, with the support of a mentor from the field throughout the semester, with the guidance of Dr Lohsnah Jeevanandam.

Four groups have been selected to present their work to SRP members.

A Sample Case: Children Group

Mei, age 9, is referred for counselling after her parents' separation. Her mother asks the therapist for weekly updates on everything Mei discloses, while her father insists her sessions stay private from both parents. Mei herself asks that nothing she shares be passed to either parent, worried it will be used against the other.

What would you do? This is the kind of real-world dilemma the Children group will resolve using the SPS Code of Ethics - come hear how they worked through it.

What Each Group's Brief Presentation Covers

  • The Landscape: key ethical dilemmas facing that population, grounded in published literature.
  • Applying the Code: do's and don'ts anchored to specific clauses of the SPS Code of Ethics.
  • Resolution: a realistic case resolved step-by-step using the SPS Ethical Decision-Making Model.
  • Reflection: a challenge the group worked through and a takeaway from the process.
